1898年 生於美國賓州，曾獲得工程師學位的他，在20初頭的年紀決定轉換到藝術跑道，工程的養成背景看的出來在其雕塑創作中有許多的影響。1923-1926年，考爾德前往紐約藝術學生聯盟（the Art Students League）學習藝術。30年代考爾德前往歐洲，在巴黎開始嘗試抽象雕塑，發展雕塑新語彙。這些「機動藝術」與「固定雕塑」藝術實踐脈絡，都成為考爾德在公場域進行大型紀念性雕塑作品。
