Her detailed observations and documentation of the metamorphosis of the butterfly make her a significant, albeit not well known, contributor to entomology.[1]

17世紀時人們相信昆蟲是從爛泥裡生出來的，視昆蟲為邪惡的象徵。瑪麗亞並不在乎別人的眼光和議論，持續專注昆蟲的研究，甚至冒險勇赴南美洲的Suriname 蘇利南研究野生動植物。她耐心仔細的觀察毛毛蟲變成了蛹，化成了美麗的蝴蝶。將昆蟲的所有生命歷程記錄在她的素描本裡。她的素描精細逼真。德國前幾年將她的肖像印製在500馬克的紙鈔及郵票上，用以推崇她的科學藝術成就，以及她大無畏的精神。
